Groups at Augustana vary in size, style, format, time and location. Opportunities are available for men and women, young adults and more mature adults. To find more about small group opportunities contact the church office at office@augustana.org.
A sampling of the small groups at Augustana includes:
Women of a Certain Age
This group of women meet "almost monthly" for fellowship, food and fun. Many have found friendships within the group for travel, hiking, movies, concerts and plays. Any woman is welcome.
Book Club
This group of literature lovers meets monthly to discuss a current book and have a potluck supper at a member's home. The club hs been active for 10 years, and some of the books read recently include The Help
Kathryn Stockett; An Object of Beauty
Steve Martin; Franklin and Eleanor: An Extraordinary Marriage
Hazel Rowley; and The Mind's Eye
Oliver Sacks.
Books for the beginning of 2012 will be: In the Garden of the Beasts by Erik Larson for January; The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow for February (the Everybody Reads selection from Multnomah County Library); and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot for March. All adults are welcome, whether you’ve read the book or not (really!).
Esther-Mary Circle
This group meets at 11:30 am for lunch at the Village Inn on Broadway on the third Wednesday, except for December. Throughout the year they enjoy several van trips together, including an annual potluck lunch at Oceanside on the coast. They also provide a ministry of hospitality and food following memorial services at Augustana. One annual event that they host is lunch and Christmas carols at the Albertina Kerr Center.
NeighborSpace
NeighborSpace meets 2-4 pm every Thursday for coffee and pie prepared by Augustana's baker extraordinaire Martin Goplen (pictured at left). This social time takes place in the Augustana library, and church members are regularly joined by staff from the non-profits that call Augustana home, as well as folks who live in the neighborhood. Bring your appetite and drop by for conversation and friendship.
Men’s Group
The Men’s Group carries out a number of projects hand-in-hand with Augustana's Property Committee and custodial staff. This group also has the best breakfast in town every Saturday at 8:30 am. All are welcome to come and eat--and means both men and women, as pictured at the top of this page. Please feel free to come for the food, even if you are unable to join us for the morning's projects around the church.
Youth Group
The Youth Group of teen-agers enjoy numerous social activities, typically on Sunday evenings. All youth and their friends are welcome to participate. See the Youth page for more information.
