If children are the future of the church, then Augustana’s youth are a real and vital presence in the many ministries of the church. In 2011 we added a part-time Youth Ministry Coordinator (Solomon Trimble, at left) to recognize the importance of this work with our young people.
Augustana youth engage in a variety of ministries, assisting in worship, performing community service, and getting together for fun meetings and outings. Youth help lead Augustana worship, first as acolytes beginning in the 5th grade, and some continue as lectors & assisting ministers during the high school & college years. Youth are encouraged to assist with specific ministry efforts aimed at experiencing what it means to be a Christian in today’s world.
The Confirmation program (learning about Christianity and Lutheranism) is for 7th and 8th grade students, with an additional High School track for those not yet confirmed. It is held at 9:50 am each Sunday through the school year. High School students who have been confirmed have their own Bible Study time, help to plan community service activities, fundraisers, and socials. There is a young adult rep seat on the church council too.
Activities have included fund-raising to support other Children such as collecting school supplies and warm clothes, pizza games and movies at the church, and regular Sunday morning and evening get-togethers and discussion times.
Currently the HS Youth meet for Bible Study Sunday mornings 9:50-10:50, have Open Door Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-6 for homework help and mentoring about everything school related, and meet the 3rd Saturday of every month 5:30-9 pm for home made Pizza, and games or a movie. The Confirmation students are all invited to pizza night too.
More than 20 young adults from Augustana attend college or are serving in the military. Augustana members support them with emails, cards and packages from home, and annual scholarships. Augustana is committed to being their “home” church, no matter where in the globe they might be. They are also able to listen to the weekly Sunday sermons via this website.
