Youth Programs
If children are the future of the church, then Augustana’s youth are a real and vital presence in the many ministries of the church. In 2011 we added a part-time Youth Ministry Coordinator (Solomon Trimble, at left) to recognize the importance of this work with our young people.
Augustana youth engage in a variety of ministries, assisting in worship, performing community service, and getting together for fun meetings and outings. Youth help lead Augustana worship, first as acolytes beginning in the 5th grade, and then as assisting ministers during the high school years. Youth are encouraged to assist with specific ministry efforts aimed at experiencing what it means to be a Christian in today’s world.
The Confirmation program (learning about Christianity and Lutheranism) is for 7th and 8th grade students, with an additional high school track for those not yet confirmed. It is held at 9:50 am each Sunday through the school year. High school students who have been confirmed help to plan community service activities, fundraisers, and socials.
Activities have included fund-raising to support Invisible Children, which helps child soldiers in Africa; a trip to Mt. Hood, overnight "lock-ins" at the church, and regular Sunday morning and evening get-togethers and discussion times.
More than twenty young adults from Augustana attend college or are serving in the military. Augustana members support them with emails, cards and packages from home, and annual scholarships. Augustana is committed to being their “home” church, no matter where in the globe they might be. They are also able to listen to the weekly Sunday sermons via this website.
Youth in the ELCA
Check out the Evangelical Lutheran Church website (www.elca.org/youth) to see the national resources and programs geared for young people.
The tri-annual ELCA Youth Gathering of 45,000 teenagers was held in July 2009 in New Orleans, declaring to all that the Lutheran church and its youth are supportive of that city's effort to come back after Hurricane Katrina and other devastating storms.
The 2012 gathering is also scheduled for New Orleans so that Lutheran youth can continue the community service work begun in 2009. Augustana again intends to send a delegation of young people to take part in putting our faith in action through social action and hard work.
