Community Affiliations

Augustana’s community involvement is widespread. We are blessed to work with many partners, both locally and globally, who support us in our purpose and ministry. Several of our partners are listed here.

If you would like to participate in any of these groups or programs, just click on the web links below:

Community Partners
The offices of the following not-for-profit organizations are located at Augustana:

National Community Land Trust Network. Our newest non-profit tenant joined us in February 2008. This is a newly formed organization whose purpose is to support their member organizations through training, best practices and technical support. There are approximately 200 communities across the U.S. that currently operate or are forming a CLT. The primary purposes of a Community Land Trust are to provide access to land and housing to people who are otherwise denied access and to preserve the affordability of housing permanently.

Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) – committed to promote affordable, stable and safe rental homes, and to educate and empower tenants about their rights and responsibilities. CAT brings tenants together to organize and collectively work for fair and equal protections in housing policy and practice. CAT was founded at Augustana Lutheran Church.

Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF) - their mission is to prevent family violence in Latino families impacted by domestic and sexual violence, to assist families in achieving self-sufficiency, and to enhance the self-esteem of these families. DIF was founded at Augustana Lutheran Church.

Irvington Pre-School - a cooperative half-day program that serves approximately 40 children and their families. The pre-school moved to Augustana in 1991.

Augustana Academy - an after school program providing arts enrichment and academic support for 4th to 8th graders. The academy 1) promotes creative arts as a tool for personal growth using both visual art and music classes; 2) increases student participation in learning and strengthens academic performance through daily individualized tutoring, and 3) supports long-term growth and development of young community leaders. The academy currently is on hiatus waiting renewed funding.

Well Arts Institute - integrates theater and visual arts with their mission: "To explore, develop and practice creativity as a means of wellness." The heart of their organization is Performing Wellness: a four-month writing/rehearsal process, working with writers from agencies around Portland. Previous writers have come from OHSU, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Portland Vet Center and many others. Performing Wellness culminates in theatrical production which transforms the writers, actors and audience in a community sharing of stories and lives. Equally important, Well Arts can provide workshops, presentations, and teaching in hospitals, clinics and care facilities in the greater Portland area.

Broader Community Involvement
Pastor Mark Knutson chairs the Board of Directors of Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF); sits on the board of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO), an association of 17 Christian denominations across Oregon that work together for unity and justice; and is a member of the Legacy Health System's Community Health Committee, the Albina Ministrial Alliance and the Institute for Christian-Muslim Understanding. He also works with the Sigma Delta Sorority Community Development Board and serves on the Northwest Health Foundation Board and the State Commission on Children and Family.

Children and Youth Partnerships
Augustana has hosted the Irvington Cooperative Preschool on the ground floor of our facilities since 1991. We’re also part of Faith in Youth, the Lunch Buddy Program at Irvington School, the Grant-Madison Caring Community, Stand for Children and Good Shepherd’s Children’s Ministries. We also partner with Family of Friends and the Amachi Program, both aimed at matching at-risk youth with caring adults and families in the congregation.
