Education

Education is a focal ministry at Augustana. We begin at baptism with parenting material for families with children three years of age and younger, and continue with organized Sunday school classes for preschoolers through adults. Age-appropriate bibles and teaching materials are used for all studying the Scriptures and Lutheran faith.

Sunday School is held from 9:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m., from September through May.

First Communion classes for children and their parents run annually for four weeks (usually in the first quarter of the year).

Vacation Bible School provides youth a chance to learn and interact with kids from other churches in the NE Portland area.

Confirmation Class is a regular part of our teaching time for 7th and 8th graders. They meet every Sunday morning. Please contact the church office if you would like more information.

Youth Group is for children in grades 7 to 12. Youth Group maintains an active schedule with annual trips to the Oregon Coast and Mt. Hood, and to local and national youth gatherings. Youth leaders have served on national boards for ELCA youth ministries.

New Member classes offer instruction to those seeking to join the church. Members are offered small catechisms, bibles and the companion “The Bible Made Easy”.

Adult Forum includes bible studies, a monthly book group with food and fellowship, and discussion of relevant current issues.

The Education Committee meets monthly on Council night (Tuesday), and all are welcome to attend a meeting or join the committee.

Augustana Library. Completed in 2001, the Augustana Library offers a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy an afternoon or evening of reading. There are books (children’s picture and chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, reference and large print novels), CDs, DVDs, magazines, videos and books on tape. Subjects include Christian living, devotionals, self-help, family issues, travel, biography, and theology reference. There is also a computer available to use whether it be to practice mouse skills or to type up homework. All materials can be checked out for 2 weeks at a time and renewed if needed longer. Donations of used books, video tapes, CDs, DVDs or cassette tapes of appropriate subject matter are appreciated and graciously accepted. If you have any questions you can contact the church office at office@augustana.org.
